Post subject:  Audiobooks pause more and more frequently as book progresses

I love Audiobook Builder, but I am havings problems on playback of longer books (over ?? hours? I haven't quantified the length yet.) As the book progresses, the playback starts to pause for about 5-10 seconds every so often (I'm not yet sure at what point the pausing starts). And the pausing increases in frequency as the end of the book nears. I seem to recall reading somewhere that this could be caused by fragmenting of the audio files on the iPod disk, but I have 5G of 80G full, and have tried using DiskWarrior to defragment the disk with no change in behavior.

I usually listen to audiobooks while driving to/from work and as such I haven't had the luxury of noting times and intervals yet.

I also wondered if this could be a symptom of a busy CPU when creating the book?

Available CPU while building will make the process slower on the Mac but shouldn't affect the quality of the output. If you test the files in iTunes or QuickTime Player they should play fine. The iPod is a different piece of kit, however...

In our testing if you had numerous (say, greater than 100) Chapters in a single Part then scrubbing through that Part on the iPod would be noticeably slower. The performance issue there is probably linear - starting at an imperceptible level but becoming noticeably slower at a certain number of Chapters and more so as even more Chapters are present.

Chapter artwork is probably also a linear performance issue on the iPod. I would guess the extra processing involved introduces a noticeable performance hit beginning significantly sooner than with simply numerous Chapters with no artwork.

Both numerous Chapters and numerous Chapters plus artwork could translate into some choppy playback. Can you tell us how many Chapters are in your Parts?

The audio book contains a total of 21 chapters, spread across 2 parts. I have book graphics but no chapter graphics

I recently tried breaking the book into segments that were no more than 4 hours long apiece, and so far, I haven't encountered the pausing symptoms on my iPod.

hi,
I'm experiencing exactly the same issue on my ipod photo 30GB:

I've created an Audiobook of nearly 12 hours with 21 chapters and no cover art. After about 3 hours the playback starts to pause, first only very shortly, near the end of the audiobook the pause occurs every 6 minutes and lasts for about 15 seconds, which is very annoying.

To be fair: I had this problem before using Audiobook Builder (when I used some join-together-Script in iTunes), and neither keeping the ipod fully charged nor resetting it helped. I just hoped that Audiobook Builder would do the trick...
By the way: the audiobook-file plays fine in iTunes.
