I found a checkbook plist file in a place it didn't belong (a folder on the desktop), and when I went to open CBP, it was empty. Yes, it was supposed to be in iCloud, so it wasn't "lost."

After a bit of work, I managed to restore it via Time Machine, but am curious how this might have happened.

I'm an old man and don't need this sort of agita in my life. :?

It sounds like the PLIST file was opened but contained no data—double-clicking any PLIST will open it in CheckBook Pro, if the application's set as the default opener on your Mac for that format (older versions saved Property list data files and Backups yet other applications use that format for storing other things meaning not all PLISTs are CBP files). Opening a PLIST that contains no readable Entries would have it replace your main file as what's automatically opened with each launch since it's the last-used file that's always brought back up. Did you try accessing the Open Recent option for switching back to your iCloud document? Using the Open Recent option would be the best way to get back to a previously used file without having to restore.

i tried that, but it didn't seem to work. What I want to know is how that vagabond plist ended up in a desktop folder.

If the file wasn't listed in the Open Recent submenu, there's always the possibility that it was cleared recently. We can outline steps for manually navigating to an iCloud document, if you ever face a similar situation again.

Now, we'd be curious to learn about how that PLIST file ended up there as well. Are you certain it was created by CheckBook Pro? Only pre-2.5 versions save data to that format and it's been roughly a year and half since 2.5 was released, so you shouldn't still have 2.3.2 or earlier installed. All applications use PLISTs to store preference information, though. If you kept the PLIST around, feel free to send it to us at support@splasm.com as we'd be happy to look at it to try and determine what application created it.
