I can't open Checkbook at all after updating to the latest operating system.

Any hints?

Did you try going to the Apple menu?
Select "Recent Items"
Under "Documents," do you see "Accounts.cbaccounts"

Try clicking that. My uneducated guess is that the path to the file must be repaired.

Of course, when you tried to open CB before, you probably created a new blank document.

So then also open CB and select Recent from the File menu. You may see two files. If so, try them.

Also, there’s an issue in El Capitan that prevents older versions of CheckBook from launching, so you may need to install the latest update. Here's where to go to learn more about CheckBook and OS X El Capitan and how to get going again with a new version: http://www.splasmata.com/?p=2952 .
