Several entries into checkbook were lost next time checkbook was opened. Tried simply deleting one entry, but the next time checkbook was opened that entry was still in the checkbook register. Tried it again with same result.

Is there a limit to the number of accounts or entries? Any idea what might be causing the problem?

Thanks.

Are you using the free trial version? That's limited to 50 entries.

There may be an issue with CheckBook's ability to write changes to the Accounts file. Unfortunately, if CheckBook cannot write to its Accounts file, the data you added or changed could not be saved. Permissions can sometimes get out of line if data is migrated to a new mac, or data is copied from one user folder to another.

To correct permissions, first quit CheckBook and then find your Accounts file using the following file path:

/Users/[your username here]/Library/Application Support/CheckBook 2/Accounts.plist

Select the Accounts.plist file, and then go to the File menu at the top of the screen and select 'Get Info'. This should open a new window with details about the file. Look for the Sharing and Permissions section. If you see your user name or a user name with (me) next to it, make sure the privilege section next to it says read and write. If it doesn't, click on the little lock on the bottom right hand corner to unlock the ability to change it if you cannot change it. Make sure you select Read and Write after you unlock it. If you do not see your current user in the list for that file, you can click the plus button below the list, and add your user with the ability to read and write.

After that is all set, close the window, and then open CheckBook again. Attempt to add a single transaction, close it and then open it again to see if the changes you made were saved.

Let us know if this does not help your situation.

The permissions were incorrectly set, but correcting them did not fix the problem.

More information... I asked a question about moving data files to another user. See my other question in the forum. Moving files from one account to another must have caused the problem. Any other suggestions to correct the original problem listed in the string?

You may want to try backing up the account from the original user via the File menu, Backup Accounts option. Save this in a location accessible by your other user. Then place that backup in the location that you originally placed the copy when you first moved it, making sure that the name is still 'Accounts.plist. Double check that the permissions are ok. Try launching CheckBook and making an entry, closing it, and see if that entry is there on next launch.

Its a different way of doing the same thing, but it may avoid some permissions issues you are having.
