Why can’t I get the schedule d reminders to pop up at the proper due date?

Do you have more than one Account set up? CheckBook's Schedule Reminder is only for the currently selected Account, so if you spend most of your time in an Account that has no Schedules you'll find you won't see the Schedule Reminder until you select one of the Accounts that does have Schedules.

As far as I can tell the account that has the scheduled entries is the selected account. Is there a preference that delays the appearance of the reminder?

The first appearance isn't controlled by the setting in the Schedule Reminder itself - it should appear about fifteen to thirty seconds after selecting the Account, and can also be delayed by most typing or mouse clicks.
