A couple clarification questions...

1. Based on the information provided with CBP version 2.5, is it true that you can only sync between Mac's via iCloud with the version of CBP purchased from the Mac App store?

2. Since I was greatly looking forward to this capability in v2.5 and I originally purchased CBP v2.0 a long, long time ago (before the advent of the Mac App store), will I have to purchase the App store version?

3. Alternatively, can this syncing be done through another service (ie Dropbox)?

4. Finally, when MoneyBug arrives, will I also face the same issue (ie CBP v2.5 for Mac will only sync with iOS MoneyBug via iCloud)?

I ask so I can plan my future finance app purchases with absolute clarity...

Many thanks, S.

Good questions. I was thinking the exact same things. Seems that those of us who've been long time users of CBPro should be somehow "grandfathered" in, so to speak. Not sure how this will work, though.

Cheers!

1. Yes, syncing with iCloud will only be enabled when CheckBook Pro is purchased from the Mac App Store. That's an Apple policy that we can't work around.

2. To sync with iCloud? Yes. We get zero options for moving our users en masse to Mac App Store licensing for free. Our only serious way out is to cut the price on the Mac App Store to something more reasonable - not free - for a very limited time so our users can migrate.

3. You can move your 2.5 documents into DropBox or Google Drive or whathaveyou, though we strongly recommend not accessing the same document from multiple devices at the same time.

4. At this stage, we're looking hard at directly supporting a third-party cloud storage provider, such as DropBox, in the iOS version. iCloud, and syncing peer-to-peer over a local network, will be baked into the iOS version as they're already baked into 2.5 on the Mac.

After careful consideration, when the time comes, I will probably just buy the AppStore version and spring for the $25. As a very old user (2005), my annual cost of less than $4 just doesn't amount to much worth complaining about, and I really like the way iCloud works in Calendar.

Heck, I'll give you guys $1K when the iOS version comes out! [OK, maybe not $1K, but at least $25]

My biggest gripe will be having to go through the Mac App Store to buy ANYTHING. PERIOD! I've got several iOS/Mac apps which do their synching quite well, thank you very much, through DropBox. So, of course, I am hoping that DropBox will be it. AND I'll throw in the $25 for good measure [of course, on top of the cost for iOS version!]!

Keith,

Many thanks for your clarity especially since you're probably dealing with much greater technical requests from the new release.

My empathies go out to you and your group for the logistical nightmare of the app store. Minor as my annoyances are, they're derived from purchasing from the app store versus purchasing from the developer directly. I was already planning on springing for v2.5. However, I would much rather Splasm get all the revenue (given all the effort you've put into v2.5) rather than just a cut...

Thanks again for this really, really useful software. After playing last night, my budgets look and feel great with v2.5, and CBP is certainly better than any other finance app offerings.

I patiently look forward to your future offerings...
Cheers,
S.

Greg,

I will haply buy the App Store version at a discounted price. But how will we know when the offer is being made (short of checking the price in the App Store daily)?

We'll be sure to make a bit of noise when the time comes :).

What a freaking load of bovine-processed grain excrement. This is yet another example of how Splasm is busier screwing over customers than they are actually providing a workable solution.

I am beyond done with this bunch... c ya...

Splasm has put out 2.5, the version they've always said was needed prior to getting the iOS version out. So, I am more hopeful than I've been in a few years. They've admitted their mistake in prognosticating dates when the iOS version would come out and have quit making such guesses. I am confident that some solution will be found that will include an alternative to iCloud, so those of us who've not purchased through the MAS may not have to pay again. And, if we do, the price will still be considerably less than what some other finance software apps cost [I hope!].

I've been waiting since early 2009, when I made an extensive review of ALL the finance apps available to Macs. I picked CBPro because it worked the best of them all. Yes, I was expecting an iOS version to come out soon because that's what they were saying back then. That has not happened and I and others have been disappointed with that marketing debacle. I stick with CBPro because it still remains the best app for my needs. I've thought about going elsewhere and, for a time, I did. But I'm back for the long haul. Others may leave and that is their choice. I guess that's the price one pays for being in business—customers come and customers go.
