I want to keep my Checkbook Pro records on an external hard drive in order to have accurate records on which ever computer I use. I have an iMac desktop computer at home, and a MacBook Pro laptop that I use at work. When I visit family, I can use their MacBook G4 Powerbook. I want to be able to access Checkbook Pro at either location/computer and have accurate, up to date records.

How do I get it all over to the hard drive? What is the path I should follow?

Gosh, I hope this makes sense!

Thanks!
Cynthia

I carry an external HD between my 2 computers (in two houses) (via SuperDuper!) and do a smart update of the whole HD. The SuperDuper external is bootable, so you can run everything from it so long as you boot from it (start up while holding down the Option key, and select the external drive). Then, when you get back home, do a reverse smart update from the external to the internal drive. This way, you won't damage or override the Checkbook plist file that's in the "other" computer as you would if you only replaced the accounts.plist file

NOTE! This will not work if one of the Macs is an intel machine and the other is the (G4) PPC.

Thanks for your reply. While I'm sure it makes perfect sense to you, it is a bit over my head.
I appreciate your time, but I'm a little apprehensive to try this.

Cynthia,

You can move your accounts from one computer to the other by copying a couple folders. Just make sure CheckBook is not running and copy the following:

/Users/[your username here]/Library/Application Support/CheckBook 2/
/Users/[your username here]/Library/Preferences/Splasm/

The first folder contains your accounts and the second folder contains your preferences. To move these to another mac, just copy those two folders to the same place on the new mac and then start up CheckBook. You should see all of your account information.

Keep in mind, if you replace the folders on the new mac, it will remove any account information that was there previously. If the new mac has CheckBook on it and people are actively using it, you will probably want to create a new user on that mac for your stuff so you dont interfere with theirs. You can do this via the System preferences in the Accounts pane. Once you have your user created, make sure you are logged in under your user name before you copy the accounts file.

If you are moving these accounts back to your old mac after a stay, make sure you close CheckBook before you copy these two folders back to your home mac.

Thanks for the reply, Randy. I'll give it a shot.
