while tabbing through an entry, one comes to checkboxes for Tax-deductible and Resolved. Is there a keystroke to check these boxes, or must you mouse over and click them?

You can go to System Settings/Keyboard and turn on Keyboard navigation for your Mac, to make it where you can tab to checkboxes—spacebar will alter what's in focus, then. Or, use the keyboard shortcut Command-Return to affect the Resolved checkbox or Command-/, for the Tax-deductible checkbox.
