When I make a transfer from one acct to another, the category in the from account is correctly identified as "Transfer", but the category field in the receiving account is never populated? Bug? By design (why?)?

I just did some test entries that transferred money from one account to another, and the category showed up in both the source and destination account without issue. Categories should work on both ends because they are shared by all accounts. Entry types will not transfer, because each account has its own unique set of types.

Can you outline your process you use to create a transfer that does not carry over the category? Thanks for the help in tracking this issue!

I misspoke. The word "Transfer" is the transaction type, not the category. It appears in the type field because i enter it so when making an entry to transfer from one account to another. I don't understand the comment that each account has its own unique set of types. all I have are checking and savings accounts, and for each of them there are only two kinds of entries - deposit and debit. A deposit entry has a transfer type, and debit entry also has a transfer type. so since a transfer is a debit from one account and a deposit to another, why doesn't the"Transfer" type arried over from the debited account to the deposited account. In the end, though, what i would like is for that to happen and suggest it as a feature add if not possible in the current version.

There is no guarantee that Transfer is in types for both accounts for those that have specific type lists, and they are not linked in any way at the type level. Some users deal with very specific sets of types, and introducing a foreign type in an account where it is not specified could be undesirable. We have to be very careful in making any changes in what users come to expect as standard behavior.

We do have requests involving transfers and carrying over the type. We will look at it again when we go through features for the next major revision of CheckBook. Thanks for all the feedback with this request!

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're talking about. Why is transfer a "foreign type"? Foreign to what? It's a default type in the latest version of Checkbook for a depost and for a debit? I'm just moving money from checking to savings or vice versa.

foreign to that account. If you start a transfer from Account A, and it has a Type from Account A, that type is not necessarily present or wanted in Account B and cannot be applied to the side of the transfer in Account B. This could throw off summaries and organization in Account B especially if the user is using a specific set of predetermined types that he or she relies on for accounting.

This isn't necessarily true in your case, because you have elected to have a type of the same name in each account.

OK. I guess. Still don't get the reasoning behind it. Sounds like some pretty obscure bookkeeping technique.

But, would ask that consideration be given to an option in preferences to permit a the "transfer" transaction type be carried over from the "from account" to the "to" account.

thanks.
