Hi there,

I have a lot of audiobooks imported into itunes. They are aac-files mono 32kHz 28kbps and sound just fine, maybe because i used itunes "optimize for speech"-feature. Now when I try to build an audiobook from those files using the same settings, pass-through doesn't seem to work: my CPU hogs to 100% for quite a while, obviously reencoding the complete audio, and the resulting audiobook sounds considerably worse the the individual input files.

So what do I have to do to use iTunes to encode the audio and ABB to just join the files?
Thanx!

p.s. I did search the forum but found nothing, please forgive me if I have not looked deep enough - hints and links are as much appreciated as the solution itself...

It seems that audio encoded with "optimize for voice" or VBR is too different to work with pass-through, thanks to Splasm Support for pointing that out to me, now I know what the problem was...

I've noticed some improvements in sound quality with the "optimize for voice" option turned on. (Like others, I've been importing into iTunes first to take advantage of the CD error correction.) I would hate to lose the improvements. Is it possible that at some point ABB would support this?

Probably not, if we were to use Apple's method on say, files coming in from CD. The end result would be the same - files with audio formats too dissimilar to permit joining into a single audio track. I think we could work around it up to a point, and take it to an extreme by ripping to uncompressed files first, then compressing all at once in a single pass, but that would cost additional build time and a lot of temporary disk space.
