I'd prefer to save all 2009 checkbook transactions to another Checkbook "file" and start a fresh 2010 version of my check account transactions. How can this be done? Is this a good practice or is it best to just keep rolling along and never really "close" one year before proceeding to the next?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. :D

Just set up Smart Folders. They're not "closed" but they are separated. I suggested that Splasm find a way to LOCK a smart folder so no change could be made by accident. In the case illustrated, Checkbook 1 holds all the entries to the account. Click on a year, though, and only entries made during that year are displayed. You can export and save any year you want. I export to a text file and open it in Excel to create a permanent record to give my accountant.

Sounds like a plan. I don't know how to set up "smart" folders, but I assume that's in the HELP file somewhere. Appreciate your sharing this technique. Happy New Year!

I've just taken 2009 out of my records.
Yes, you can make smart folders (+ sign at the bottom of the account sidebar)

I chose to make a normal folder '2009' for each account (same place as smart folders) then selected and dragged the records from the account to the 2009 folder for each one.. The records no longer fill up the main account window but are available if needed and the balance remains.
All the best for twenty ten.. :)

Confused here. When I click the "+" at bottom of the list of accounts I have created, I can only create another account, not a folder. I am in the right screen to do procedure you described above?

You should get a dropdown menu, like this one (second attachment)... or else just add it from the top Account menu (first attachment).

That menu choice apparently is only in the Checkbook Pro version, not in the Checkbook version.

Perhaps. Maybe it's time to upgrade, then? It's not particularly expensive, and maybe you even qualify for the free upgrade?

Yes, I emailed customer support to see what the upgrade price would be...
