There should be an alert when opening CheckBook if the accounts file cannot be located. Better yet, the user should be given an opportunity to locate the file, and mount the disk it is on if it is offline. I am not using the default file location. I keep my accounts file on an encrypted disk image file. I don't always remember to mount the disk image before launching the program. That happened today, and instead of complaining, CheckBook reverted to an older version of the file that I had at the default location. I didn't notice right away, so entered several transactions before I realized something was screwy. I used a similar setup with Quicken, and for all its faults, Quicken handled it exactly right. Using a different data file than the one specified in the application's preferences should never be done without asking.

Hi Cliff,

I apologize for the confusion on that. You're right, we're keeping things a little too quiet by falling back to the default Accounts file location without asking the user for directions. I'll see what we can do to get that working better for you :).
