I opened Checkbook this morning and my checking and savings accounts were not there. It was as if it was a new piece of software. How do I recover? Checkbook 2.3.2, OS X 10.8.2

Firstly, you'll want to ensure that a QuickFilter or Account password-lock isn't simply hiding your data from sight.

To clear a QuickFilter, click the magnifying glass symbol in the white Search box at the top of the window and then, choose 'Clear QuickFilter Options…' from the drop-down list.

To access and unlock a locked Account, click on the Account name from where it's listed in the Account drawer. If you don't see an Account drawer to either side of the window, click the Accounts button in the top right corner of the window to reopen it.

If none of that does the trick, it's likely you've suffered some data loss after all. This sort of thing is extremely rare, but can result either from the accidental moving or removal of an Accounts data file or from a serious crash interrupting the save process. Whatever the case, you might try restoring from one of the Backups that CheckBook automatically saves to a hidden folder every week or so. For that, choose 'Preferences…' from the CheckBook menu at the top of the screen and click into the Advanced section of the Preferences. Then, hit Restore Accounts, Continue, and navigate to the Backups folder by holding down the Shift and Command keys with one hand while hitting the letter G key with your free hand. Then, paste the following path into the Go-to-folder field that appears:

~/Library/Application Support/Splasm Software, Inc./CheckBook 2/Backups

Hit Go and you'll end up inside the Backups folder, where items with names beginning in 'Accounts' and ending with '.plist.Z' are listed. Going through these Backup files, locate one with a very recent Date of creation by selecting an item and noting the date beside where it says 'Created' (if you don't see that information, select 'As Columns' from the View menu at the top of the screen). With the best Backup selected, hit the Restore button. All the data stored in the Backup will then load into the register.

Thanks for the speedy reply, Allan! I had to restore the backup but your instructions were clear and it worked the first time. The backup is only four days old so I have to recreate very little data. Thanks!

If you've done a LOT of work, or created new accounts or smart folders, it wouldn't hurt to hit command-S before you close the app.

Another good habit to get into is doing a daily manual backup. I keep a backup in my Dropbox folder, but, of course, you can create a backup anywhere.
