I'm having a bit of a problem with the account balance display.

The account, according to the banks' website, reports about $30 less than the Checkbook balance, and when I go through and add up the transactions in Checkbook, I come up with the same amount that the bank reports.

I suspect database corruption, which is highly likely as I've been using the same database file for almost 5 years now. I would think about just deleting and starting over from statements, but it would take me several days to re-input the numerous transactions I've accumulated. :(

Is it possible to force a re-build of the Checkbook file?

whenever that's happened to me, it's a double entry. It could also be a hold against your account by a credit card transaction Check your bank online data for "check holds" and see if it's there.

All is not lost. Checkbook archives itself in your user folder. You have to fiddle with the archive, remane the current checkbook file and save it, and then you can go back in time to an earlier one to look for it. I think it's a check card hold, though

Unfortunately my archives don't go back far enough to resolve the issue. And I'm fairly certain that there are no holds left on the account. When I manually add up all the entries in Checkbook, the total I come up with matches the bank account exactly.

I have no idea if this will work, but try searching for the amount of differance in checkbook. You can search on $ amounts by making the selection from the drop down menu. If it finds the amount, I'd copy the information by hand and then delete the entry. Then I'd go back to my entry screen and reenter the information again and see if it is now included correctly.

Oh, by the way, I'd make a backup of my existing file before I do anything else. That way, if the file is somehow corrupted and things go wrong you'll have a backup to return to. Also, I'd backup after each step of the process whether it's what I suggest or something else. As long as it is working, I'd keep backing it up just in case.

I looked, but I can't seem to find the amount of the discrepancy anywhere in Checkbook.

I'd completely forgotten about it, because I no longer use the account and it's been zeroed for the purposes of the account balances page, but another account had this same problem a year or two ago. But the difference was more substantial, there was $2,000 in un-accountable debits. It has never had any financial relation to the account I'm having trouble with now.

I go to my bank's site every day and balance it against the CB.

The few times I've had discrepancies they were not always easy to find -- even though I was balancing daily. This month, two online payments in Checkbook that should have been paid by the bank were not. I learned that I had mistakenly told the bank to pay the 2 bills in the following month from when they SHOULD have been paid. At least I got to reschedule the payments before late charges kicked in.

I'm notorious for transposing numbers, too, and have entered amounts with digits switched. Also not easy to find. And of course, the check card holds and international conversion charges that the bank applied during my wife's trip to France last month (and couldn't be entered in CB until AFTER the charges had hit the bank).

All of my problems were my own fault, though

It is true that I found a few transposed numbers in my first search through, which when corrected did alter the total some, but Checkbook is still off. It's off from it's own records, is what's aggravating.
